Why does my Audio CD display as "Unknown Album" or "Unknown Artist" in Power2Go and PowerDVD, and how does the software retrieve track information?
It is an expected and normal condition for Audio CDs to display without album or artist information under current operating system constraints. Power2Go and PowerDVD do not natively include a feature to retrieve Audio CD album information from online databases. Instead, the software relies on two external sources to display album and track details:
- CD-Text: Text information (such as artist, album, and track titles) physically embedded onto the disc by the manufacturer during production. If the manufacturer included this data on the disc, the information will display normally in the software. (For more details, see CD-Text on Wikipedia).
- Windows Media Component: Online album information retrieved in the background by the native Windows Media Player component built into the Windows operating system.
According to recent updates in January 2026, Microsoft has completely removed the online album information retrieval function from the Windows Media Player legacy component across all Windows operating systems (including Windows 10).

By current program design, if the physical Audio CD does not contain CD-Text natively, the software attempts to fall back to the Windows component. Because Microsoft has permanently discontinued that online retrieval functionality, the software can no longer pull the data from the internet. Consequently, if the physical disc lacks embedded data and the OS cannot retrieve it from the web, the "Unknown Album" or "Unknown Artist" display is the expected behavior.
