In InstantBurn 3, what is the difference between erasing and formatting?

InstantBurn 3 formats a disc in UDF format. The "Erase Tool" erases a CD-RW/DVD-RW/DVD+RW disc and reverts it to the same condition it was when you bought it, i.e. a blank disc.
